Farmers' Union Too Busy For Defence

-MR RUSHWORTH

[Special to “Northern Advocate ”l AUCKLAND, This Day.

“The Farmers’ Union has enough fish to fry at the present time without dabbling in the technicalities of defence,” said the President of the Auckland Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union, Mr H. M. Rushworth, when the question of compulsory military training was raised at the conference of the union to-day.

“We realise just as the people of Britain do that there is only one adequate defence in war,” he remarked, “and that is universal national service, applicable to men, women and children, on the lines tested out recently.” It was desirable, he added, that the basis of such service should be voluntary, but if this was inadequate to meet the position, compulsory service was the only alternative.
