jtor over five hours yesterday, a handful of men fought to subdue a bush fire which threatened about 20 beach houses in the area behind the southern end of Piha beach. Starting at a new road which will open up sections on the Rayner Estate, the flames burned both up the side of the hill ahd downward against a westerly breeze towards the beach. About 30 acres of bush, tea-tree and small trees were destroyed before the flames were stopped less than 100 yards from the nearest of the cottages.
NET profit of £62,148, against £77,735 last year, is reported by Kempthorne, Prosser and Company’s New Zealand Drug Company, Ltd., for the year ended January 31. The dividend, as already announced, is unchanged at 8 per cent for the year, and requires £46,640. The directors also recommend an addition of £15,000 to general reserve, leaving £39,952 to be carried forward, against £39,444 brought into the accounts.
rjpWO fresh Wellington swimming records were established at the final carnival I'ast night. Retaining the Wellington Centre 100 yards breast-stroke championship, J. Williams broke the record by 13-ssec, swimming the distance in 72 3-ssec. K. Spry took 77 2-ssec in winning the 100 yards back-stroke, setting a new Wellington record. This time is 1 3-ssec outside the New Zealand record.
