Policeman Shot During Desperate Struggle
SYDNEY, February 27. After .a desperate struggle with one of two suspects at Newton yesterday, Constable Lionel George Guise, aged 22, single, was shot in the abdomen, and died several hours later in hospital. It is believed Constable Guise was shot with his own revolver, and also that a suspect was wounded, probably in the hand. A large party of police early this morning surrounded a house in the suburb of Paddington, and arrested two young men, who submitted quietly. One had a wounded hand.
Leslie William Murphy, aged 24, .and Stanley Dayment, aged 28, were charged later today with having murdered Constable Guise, and were remanded.
Both were further charged with breaking and entering, and each was charged separately with being found at night with house breaking implements in his possession.
