Republicans Gaining Ground In U.S.
WASHINGTON, February 27. “Twenty-one states are now unquestionably Republican, and if the party carries New York State in 1940 it will put its candidate in White House/’ the Republican National Committee declared in a statement significantly issued the day after Mr Thomas E. Dewey had secured the conviction of James J. Hines, former Tammany leader, on charges of conspiring with gangsters.
There is much speculation here whether the statement represented an advance move toward pressing the Presidential candidacy of Mr Dewey, who is virtually .assured of the New York delegates’ unanimous support at the convention.
The Republicans claim control of 221 electoral votes, 45 under the majority needed.
