BACK TO FORM. Dungarvan’s wins at Hawera raised his earnings to approximately £3BOO. As a three-year-old, he rapidly collected more than £IOOO, and next season went on to win about £1875, all in less than 1,8 months. He accounted for a big field in the Members’ Handicap at Trentham with 9.10, and Won the Marton Cup with 9.0, but then broke down and was cfut for considerably more than a ’ year. He took some time to strike form on resumption, but as he is only six he has possibilities of further success.

NEREUS UNLUCKY. Nereus raced without any luck both days at the Egmont meeting. He. was going nicely along the back in the Waipapa Hack Handicap on the first day when he met with interference that cost him four or five lengths. As he was only beaten by a nose at the finish, this check undoubtedly cost him the race. In the Nolan Gup: he was snowed in all the and it was only by the narrowest of margins that he failed to fill third place. He is in good order at present, and his turn should not be far off.

NEW MILE RECORD; • Cavan Chief established a record for a mile saddle race when he won the Final Handicap at the New Brighton trotting meeting in 2.6 on Saturday. The previous best time for New Zealand and Australia was 2.7 2-5, recorded by Rocks Ahead. Cavan Chief gave a remarkable display, for he conceded 36 yards start to a good field and won comfortably. He waited on the field to the straight, and won with ease from Racketeer and Credit .Funds, who had made most of the running. Cavan Chief has won at a mile in his last three starts, in 2.10 1-5, 2.8 1-5. and 2.6.

Sv WILSON RECOVERING. The Trentham horseman S. Wilson is speedily recovering from the serious accident he met with at Otaki early in December. It is unlikely, however; that he will be riding again for some weeks yet. Wilson fell with Bar abbas in the maiden event at the Otaki meeting. This was his first start since he suffered a fall with Rakahanga at the finish of the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton on New Zealand Cup day. Wilson does not intend to take any .chances this time, and is making sure of a complete recovery before he accepts any riding engagements. He has derived much benefit from his enforced holiday.

DEATH OF PALADIN. The death has occurred at Hornby, Christchurch, where he had been located lately, of the stallion Paladin, sire of many good winners. Chide was the best of his stock, the New Zealand Cup, Canterbury Cup and G. G. Stead Cup being among his successes as a four-year-old. Palantua was another of Paladin's progeny to win the New Zealand Cup. Rabbi won the Metropolitan Handicap, and afterwards was a successful sire. Satrap, a New Zealand and Great Northern St. Legcr winner, like Chide, left the Dominion, being sold at a big figure. These were only a few of the most notable horses sired by Paladin. In 1929-30. when Chide was at his best, his stock won £10,247.
