• UNUSUAL NAME. . A recent winner at Launceston won under the name of Mac o’ Roni. He was got by Marconigram—Belle o’ the Scots. . . . TRENTHAM APPOINTMENTS. Mr D. J. Guiney has been appointed assistant judge to the Wellington Racing Club, and Mr S. V. McEwen has been appointed the club’s official announcer. SMOKE SCREEN. Smoke Screen is not engaged at Wanganui, but will make his next appearance at the Taranaki meeting, and then race at Trentham. SMALL STAKE. The race won by Mr G. J. Barton’s two-year-old, Bursary, in Melbourne recently, was worth £2O to the winner, but as the colt was second favourite, at good odds, the stake would not be the main consideration. Bursary won by a neck, and covered the five furlongs in 1.21. THE BEST JUVENILE. With High Caste out of the Dominion, and likely to do his future racing in Australia, Beaulivre is easily the outstanding two-year-old of the moment, and in the North Island Challenge Stakes, run over seven furlongs at Trentham next month, he will be the chief attraction. Winning Rival beat Beaulivre in the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton, and but for her mishap she would no doubt have disputed Beaulivre’s claim to supremacy.

CYRANO WELL BRED. Cyrano, who won the final event at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting last Wednesday and paid a dividend of nearly a century and a-quarter, is a six-year-old gelding by Wrack from Nantwich. Wrack, now in Tasmania, was probably the best stallion ever imported from America, for he left great performers at both the trotting and the pacing gait. Nantwich, the dam of Cyrano, was a speedy pacer, and won the Sapling Stakes and Great Northern Derby. She was by Nelson Bingen—Pearlchild. PROMISING NOVICES. Two youngsters that are likely to be heai’d of again are Ora King and Hunter's Rose. The former boat the opposition in the Waimangu Stakes at Rotorua, while Hunter's Rose won the Flying Stakes in impressive stylo at the same meeting. They had done little racing previously, but both displayed abundance of speed in their respective engagements. Hunter’s Rose is a racylooking filly by Hunting Song from Hose Willonyx, and is descended from the noted Mermaid family.
