Cunningham To Appeal

[Special to J Northern Advocate’’} AUCKLAND, This Day. The Judicial Committee of the Auckland Trotting Club recently decided to disqualify N. Cunningham and the horse Don Walla for 12 months in connection with the scratching of Don Walla in the first division of the Waiheke Handicap at its recent meeting. Cunningham has decided to appeal against this decision to the Board cf the New Zealand Trotting Association in Christchurch, and the appeal is to bo lodged this afternoon. A LUCKY FALL, Strange stories are told of betting experiences. One worth quoting is that of a man who, at a Melbourne Cup meeting, went on to the Hill at Flemington for the purpose of plunging on J. E. Brewer’s mount in the Cup Hurdles. Reserving 21- for his return fare to the city by cab, he invested all available cash on The Pioneer, and had the mortification of seeing the horse finish an inglorious fifth. Disgusted, he resolved to get out of the blinding rain and go home before the Cup, in which he could have no financial interest. Walking down the Hill, he slipped, and became covered with mud. Next task, of course, was to try to remove evidences of the fall. Rubbing his hands together, he discovered half a sovereign embedded in the slime! Rushing to a bookmaker, he inquired what was the longest-priced outsider for the Cup. Among the horses quoted at 50 to 1 was Glenloth. Remembering that this stallion had been fancied for the Caulfield Cup, he backed him, and shrieked with delight over the ensuing profit of £25. Supporting the winners of the last two races, this singular favourite of fortune left the course with a “roll” of more than £9O.
