Lineside Grass Fire Near Park Avenue

Grass burning on the side of the railway line near Park Avenue, Whangarei, caused the fire alarm to be sounded shortly after one o’clock this afternoon. The volunteer fire brigade turned out in full force, and the flames were found to be threatening a hedge, which, had it caught fire, would have endangered a nearby house. Some 400 feet of hose was run out from the Kensington Avenue-Park Avenue corner, and the outbreak was quelled within a few minutes. First This Summer. This was the first fire of such a nature to which the brigade has been called thi's summer. With the continued dry weather, there is considerable danger from fire taking a strong hold in scrub or grass, especially in the borough, where extensive damage would result should such an outbreak reach more than small proportions.
