Cripps Has Support For United Opposition

(Received 10 a.m.) 1 ' LONDON, January 26, The Labour Council of Bristol East, Sir Stafford Cripps’ constituency, passed a resolution expressing confidence in him. Sir Stafford Cripps’ memorandum, which the executive condemned, declared the time was ripe for a great movement toward democracy, and advocated a “concentrated opposition.” The statement added that it was not right for any party, in a time of crisis, to insist in full measure upon its doctrines and policies. The executive of the Labour Party has issued a statement describing Sir Stafford Cripps’ campaign over a long period a? being calculated to weaken the unity of the party, and his present action as harmful.

“Can Go On Expelling Others.” Sir Stafford issued a statement trusting that his friends would redouble their efforts to secure a combination of all anti-Fascist forces, in order to get a Government which would effectively protect democracy and freedom. The Independent Cable Service says the possibility that others may follow Sir Stafford Cripps is indicated by a statement by Mr A. Bevin (Labour, Monmouth): “If Sir Stafford Cripps was expelled for wanting to unite the forces of freedom and democracy, they can go on expelling others. “They can expel me. His crime is my crime. He has given a lead for many of us to follow.”
