Stray Cats To Be shot

[Special ' to “Northern Advocate ” 3 AUCKLAND, This Day.

Cats, mostly from abandoned Public Works camps, are a definite menace to native bird-life.

The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, said yesterday that reports received showed that several species of native birds had suffered a heavy toll, more especially in the vast forests in the South Island. So extensive are the depredations of these stray cats that they have now been listed with deer, goats, stoats, weasels and rats for destruction when seen in the bush by official deershooting parties. Mr Parry said that some reports were that cats were proving as detrimental to bird-life as were the stoat and weasel, which were shot on sight.
