Helena Bay School Concert

The Helena Bay school presented a very festive appearance on Thursday, when the school children entertained their parents at an afternoon, concert. The school room had been gaily decoiated lor the occasion and a beautiful Christmas tree, laden with toys, occupied a prominent position. Each child in the district received a present of a toy, a balloon and a bag of sweets from Santa Claus.

The following items were given;Flay, "Robin Hood.” boys; pof dance and song, Eva and Rang! Takimoana; recitation, "Someone Came Knocking.” Naomi Le Clerc; “Jingle Bells,” junior and middle division; recitation. "The Elf and the Dormouse.” Janet Bradney: play, "The Witch’s Parlour,” middle division; play. “Marigold and the Elves,” primers and juniors; action song, in costume, “The Dolls,” junior and middle division. The concluding item was a Christmas carol sung by the whole school.

Before presenting the prizes, the teacher, Mrs Bradnoy, briefly outlined the work of the yoap and congratulated the children on their sijeeess in the various school club competitions, particularly in swimming and lifesaving. for which the Amateur Swimming Association had awarded certificates. A school certificate had also been won, as 92 per cent, of the children had swum 50 yards or more. Life-saving certificates were awarded to Phoebe Remo, Dawn Matheson, Eva Takimoana, Mihi Takimoana, Frances Saddler, Ken Matheson, Sydney Thompson and Katene Bennett.

Swimming, certificates of merit: Katene Bennett (2080 yards), Ken Matheson (2080 yards). 250 yards: Phoebe Remo, Mihi Takimoana, Eva Takimoana. 100 yards: Sydney Thompson. 50 yards; Ray Hooper, Dawn Matheson, Rhoda Webb, Billy Matheson, William Bennett, Frances Saddler. 25 yards: Olive Allan.

The school had also been successful in gaining prizes at the recent Sweet Pea Club Show at Whangarei. The only entrants for the native tree competition had won second and third places. The following gained prizes in the school competitions:— Sweet peas, mixed: Janet Bradney.l, Ray Hooper and Rhoda Webb 2. Potatoes: Sydney Thompson 1, Primer 1 children 2. Kidney potatoes: Ray Hooper 1, Cecil Sowter 2. The Rev. H. Heaslip presented the books and certificates, and thanked Mrs Bradney and the children for the entertainment. Mrs Bradney, who is leaving the school, was accorded three hearty cheers. Afternoon tea was served on the lawn, where the beautiful flowers made a lovely setting for the bright fancy dresses worn by the children. The dresses were as follows:—Olive Allen, Witch; Rhoda Webb, Sonja Henie; Dawn Matheson, Mauve Fairy; Rangi Takimoana, Maori Dancer; Eva Takimoana, Czech Peasant; Janet Bradney and Naomi Le Clerc, Victorian Dolls; Ken Matheson, Robin Hood; Sydney Thompson, Sir Richard Lee; Ray Hooper, Santa Claus; Billy Matheson, Chinaman; lan Matheson, Bird; Jackie Sowter, Jockey; Cecil Sowter, Will Scarlet; Billy Smith. “Pop-eye the Sailor.”
