Sunday Tennis On School Grounds
[Sjoecial to “Northern Advocate .”l CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
The question whether tennis, or any organised game should be allowed on school grounds on Sundays did not find the members of the Canterbury Education Board of one mind during aa discussion. The Linwood Avenue school committee inquired whether the board permitted Sunday play on school tennis courts. Over a period of years it had been the policy of the board that organised games should not be allowed on school grounds on Sundays, said Mr C. Thompson. “I am quite prepared to be called a conservative and out of date, but I adhere to the principle that we should honour the Sabbath.” ‘T am prepared to go further than Mr Thompson, and I would be proud to be stigmatised a wowser on this question,” said Mr R. Wild. Eventually the discussion lapsed, when Mr G. Benstead gave notice to move at the next meeting that the resolution on the bocks forbidding organised play on Sundays should be rescinded.
