Ngunguru Birthday
The fifth birthday of the Ngunguru Women’s Institute took the form of an enjoyable dance. It was well attended, visitors being present from Matapouri, Kiripaka and Marua Institutes, The evening went with a swing under the able combination of Mr H. B. Goodhew, as M.C. and the music played by the orchestra of Messrs Brown, of Marua. Extras were played by Miss Maud Brown, Ngunguru. The lucky packet confetti waltz was won by Miss L. Watson and Mr G. Jenkins, and the Monte Carlo waltz by Miss A. Sands and Mr A. Pullman.
A clever sketch with a most unexpected denoument, “Don’t, jump at conclusions,” was presented by Miss Dawn Grogan and MSss Anne Armstrong, two clever young members of the Institute.
After supper, the five candles on the beautiful birthday cake were lit by Miss E. Wellington, the youngest member. After welcoming the visitors and presenting the prizes for the year, Mrs Armstrong, the president, cut the cake. Mrs Morrison, president of the Matapouri Women’s Institute responded on behalf of the visitors.
The prize winners for the year were Mrs H. Snell and Miss I. McKenzie equal first, and Mrs Armstrong and Mrs C. Snell equal second.
Ruatangata
A very enjoyable and instructive meeting, at which there was a good attendance of members was held' at Ruatangata. After the singing of “Comrades and Friends,” the president introduced Mrs Pattersen, of Whangarei, who gave a very able demonstration on the making of fancy lampshades. The demonstrator had with her two beautiful examples of her work, which were much admired by all. Later in the afternoon the members had a demonstration in electric cleaning with a well-known make of vacuum cleaner. No doubt those who had so painstakingly swept the floor several times just befoi’e, were much surprised at the amount of dust collected after-. A competition for a banner design was won by Miss J. Yates, who used the Institute badge with a spray of clematis round it. Another competition for guessing the contents of a mystery parcel, donated by Mrs Flyger was correctly guessed by Mrs V. Grantham and Miss L. Hodge. The parcel proved to bo a pretty lampshade, and in the draw the Tatter was the lucky winner. A welcome cup of tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs Watts and Masses A. Watts and J. Johnston. During the afternoon the members made up a parcel to bo sent to the leper station.
