Lady Judges Whangarei Calves
A lady judged at Whangarei school calf club parades on Thursday. She was Mrs B. P. Hawken, wife of one of the best known Northland judges, and a member of the Christie family, which has a wide reputation as breeders of classical stock. Before her marriage Mrs Hawken was x’esponsible for rearing Vivandiere, a champion Jersey cow of New Zealand. At Karetu, Waiomio and Orauta native schools Mrs Hawken officiated and pointed up the calves with the air of a professional. More than that, she demonstrated at the conclusion of her judging and there was not one spectator who doubted ,the accuracy of her awards. “We arc fortunate,” remarked Mr J. H. Donneliy, agricultural instructor to schools, “in having a judge of Mrs Hawken’s capabilities in our district. We hope that next year she may play an even more active part in the judging of calf club parades. “Of course.” Mr Dennehy added with a smile, “there’s an advantage in having lady judges—they always get the last word!”
