Australian Mining Threat

SYDNEY, August 9,

The debate continues at the coal miners’ convention on the log of claims, but secrecy is being maintained, and it is not easy to ascertain the trend of the discussion. It is known, however, that the executive intends to submit the log, when it is finalised, to aggregate meetings of miners throughout Australia. The miners decided to seek further information from the Premier, Mr B. S. Stevens, regarding his offer to set up a tribunal of inquiry into mine safety. The miners’ convention desires the scope of the inquiry extended to cover other issues embodied in their log.

The Sydney County Council has decided to purchase heavy stocks of coal from various fields and to continue to supplement its present reserve of 96,000 tons. Consideration is also being given to bringing coal consignments from New Zealand.
