Canton Again Bombed

(Received 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, August 9. Twenty Japanese aeroplanes again bombed Canton this morning. The atj tack was directed against the powar j station, and also the residential district of Saikuan, which had not previously been bombed. It was filled with refugees, and therefore the casualties were heavy. Leaflets were dropped threatening to bomb the city for ten consecutive days. In the third raid since dawn today 102 were killed and 159 injured. There were scenes of heart-rending devastation as survivors made a search for bodies under the blasted buildings. Heartened by reports of the Japanese withdrawal of troops from North China, says a Hankow despatch, the Chinese are advancing on the north bank of the Yangtse and hammering at the gates of Hwangmei and Taiha. They have recaptured the hill overlooking Kiukiang, and repulsed a Japanese landing 30 miles from the town. The Chinese claim that the Japanese warships are withdrawing from Poyang Lake and making no attempt to advance. They estimate that 3,000 Japanese were killed at Kiukiang.
