Blizzard In Manawatu Area

JBlizzard conditions were experienced in places last night on the hills south of Palmerston North. Yesterday morning the lower hills were coated with snow to a depth of several inches, while the higher ranges wear a heavy mantle. The temperature in the city last night fell very low, and a few flakes of snow fell. Near Fitzherbert hills the storm was declared by settlers to be the worst for 18 years. The snowfall in southern Hawke's Bay had the effect of putting most of the rural telephone lines out of action. Norsewood. Tataramoa, Ruaroa, Umataoroa and Tiratu being cut off from the Dannevirke exchange. Most of the trouble was due to snow on the lines. Toll calls north of Dannevirke, as far as Waipawa, were not possible yesterday morning. The fall was general throughout the district, the depth being about three inches to four inches, except where there arc drifts. There are minor slips, but no serious damage is reported.
