Snow At Wellington
[Per Press Association. Copyright .] . WELLINGTON, This Day.
The weather was bitterly cold in Wellington city and suburbs yesterday and on Saturday, with heavy falls of hail yesterday afternoon and evening. A fresh wind blew from the south-east. Snow fell heavily at Karori at about 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon, and later at night the ground in the residential and shopping area was covered to a depth of half an inch to an inch. Heavy hail, with some snow, fell intermittently yesterday. A number of cars were held up on the Rimutakas on Friday night, and some motorists spent the night there. At the Summit there were ten inches of snow. Automobile Association patrols were out practically all night, and were on the job again yesterday morning. It was possible by that time for cars to get through without chains. The association has issued a warning advice to motorists that only those to whom it is necessary to travel should attempt the road. A message from Westport states that snow, which was very low on the mountains on Saturday,,has been steadily 'clearing, and yesterday there was a warmer wind.
