Farm Manager Service Proposed

At the meeting of the Bay of Islands Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union ,a report was read on the pro-f posed scheme for providing a farm manager for farmers who. through illness or from other causes .are unable to attend to their duties on Ihc farm lor a period Kaingaroa Scheme. j There were two schemes, and one had already been put into operation at Te Awamutu, while the other, framed by Mr Morphctt (Kaingaroa) along the lines of an insurance indemnity, has so far had no practical application. In tiro case of Te Awarnutu. any farmer availing himself of the scheme had in pay the wages of the manager while employing him, and in the other case ! the contribution by farmers towards the scheme would cover the cost of | the manager should his services be j required. j Mr E. R. Bird said the principle un- | derlying the local scheme was sound. ! and it was a question of whether they were going to bo faint-hearted or 'wore going to go ahead with the scheme. He would move that they approve the scheme and that steps be taken to form a group. Mr Bates: The trouble today is the shortage of men for farm work, and where are wo going to got the men who are to act as managers? Always Available. Mr Harrison; Under the Te Awarnutu scheme, a farmer gets a manager if he is available, but under our scheme a man would be available for 52 weeks of the year. He thought the dairy companies were in the best position to work the scheme. They all wanted the scheme, but how long would it be before it would be in operation? The best way would be to .refer the matter to branches, which could report to the next conference. A branch may consider that in its district it Would be preferable to have a scheme operated by the dairy company, or it may favour groups covering the whole of the Bay of Islands ' district. Mr Bird’s motion was carried, after he had added to»it: “That the scheme be referred to the branches.”
