Railways Show Smaller Profit

Lost ground to the extent of £41,136 in net revenue for the four-weekly period ended June 25, compared with the corresponding period last year is shown by the Railway Working Account, an abstract of which was gazetted last night. A working loss of £26,709 replaces a profit of £14,427 last year. There was a profit of £69,940 in 1936-37. The gross revenue for the four weeks was £631,234, which was £27,928 .greater than last year. Expenses were increased by £69,064 to £657,943. Operating accounts for the North Island lines show revenue amounting to £335,196, an increase of £16,307, and expenses totalling £348,986, an increase of £29.143. There was a loss of £13,790, compared with a loss of £954 last year. From the South Island’ railway receipts were £204,910, a decrease of £11,981. Expenses were £239,321, or £19,406 more than last year. There was a loss of £34,411 compared with a loss of £3024.
