Kensington Defeat Visiting Team

Sparking play was seen for most of the way when Kensington seniors dej footed the visiting Fonsonby Reserve | team from Auckland 13—B at Jubilee Park prior to the competition fixture between City and Kamo. Although the standard fell off a good deal in the latter part of the second i spell, the first half was played at a I rattling pace, and the game was one : of the most thrilling seen on the Park I tins year. Ponsonby were formidable j opposition, but Kensington rose to the i occasion, bright open tactics on attack j and a solid defence giving them a I meritorious victory. First Blood To Ponsonby, j Ponsonby backs opened up the game I from the start, but Kensington broke j through and the first few minutes ! saw Hedley well on his way until ! grassed by Martin. Ponsonby came ; back, and from a clean-cut passing ! movement Carr cut through and ; handed on for Clark to score. Shilling could not add the extra points. ; Ponsonby staged u series of short, swift thrusts which took Kensington , all their time to counter, and one : snappy movement with Smith in the limelight looked like bringing off ani other score, but Jim McNeill came | to light and cleared to turn defence i into attack.

Coming up fast, Hedley beat the opposing winger and diverted the ball towards the posts. From a scrum D. Parkes went over, equalising the score. McNeill failed to raise the flags. Pretty Passing.

Kensington rearguard came into action with a pretty passing sortie from half-way, the ball swinging out for Brown to cross. Dave Parkes converted, putting Kensington five

points up. Just before half-time Martin (Ponsonby) found the uprights with an excellent free kick not far short of half-way.

Upon the resumption Kensington went in from the kick-off, and were on Ponsonby’s line immediately. From a scrum McDonald snapped the leather out for Abbott to score. Parkes again converted. Ponsonby retaliated, to hold Kensington in their own territory for a considerable space, and finally Carr was successful in getting across from another clean-cut . back movement. Martin failed to convert. Kensington Hook Well.

This was the last score. Kensington were hooking well, and if anything stayed the pace better than their opponents, bi\t were unable to put the final polish on their movements. The last quarter of an hour was indecisive’; although Ponsonby were holding a territorial advantage at the final whistle.
