Submarine Origin
WELLINGTON, This Day. An earthquake of submarine origin is believed to have occurred near New Guinea at 7.55 a.m. on Saturday. The seismograph at the Magnetic Observatory at Christchurch recorded the first tremor, which, beginning abruptly, lasted with varying intensity for about five minutes. • Eight minutes after the first tremor a second shock, sharper, longer, and much more obvious than the first was reorded. Shocks were recorded spasmodically for two hours.
