Earth Tremors Cause Alarm in Britain and Europe

(Received 8.30 a.m.) LONDON. June 11. ■THOUSANDS CF PEOPLE WERE A3LARMED BY EARTH TREMORS AT NOON LASTING FOR SEVERAL SECONDS. PARIS AND BRUSSELS, AND ALSO LONDON, EXPERIENCED >THE SHOCKS. TELEPHONE COMMUNICATIONS WERE DISRUPTED. The tremor in Britain was most severe in the Woolwich district; and cr.rs parked at the Arsenal were actually seen to move. The earthquake is believed to have had its origin in the English channel. Shocks were felt in several parts of Northern Europe, later messages slate, including Holland and Rhineland,- and lasting from 30 seconds to six minutes. • '

Street Clocks Stop In Britain. Observers declare that the Great Fire Monument in London,, and the television tower at Alexandra Palace swayed. Many street clocks were stopped. The shock was most severe in the region of Ghent, Belgium, where falling chimneys and bricks injured hundreds and killed a man. , • •, ;■ Another victim was fatally injured when thrown under a motor can ; Twenty persons were injured by falling walls at Roubaix, France, where a wedding party fled from a church. A second shock was felt in Paris this afternoon.
