Japs. Beat Up Two Britons; Strong Protest
(Received 2.30 p.m.) SHANGHAI, January '7. Japanese last night maltreated two Britons, Inspector West and Sergeant Turner. The latter was watching Japanese searching a Chinese hawker r.;od remarked to a Japanese fellowofficer of the International Police that the troops seemed to be unnecessarily rough. The Japanese punched him on the nose, saying: “It none of your damned business.” Japanese troops entered the British sector and dragged Turner back and struck him with their fists. Inspector West, on arriving, demanded Turner’s release, but he was also beaten before the pair were released. A Warning, The British Commander-in-Chief called on General Harada and protested in the strongest'terms against Japanese violation of the British sector and the ill-treatment of Turner,
. He warned. General Harada that any such occurrence might lead to the gravest possible consequences. A Hongkong message says that foreigners in Hongkew are required to furnish particulars and photographs of themselves and their servants to Jap-
anese authorities..
They must also make “a gentle bow” when passing Japanese sentries, as they represent the Emperor. Foreigners are invited to drink free or charge the toast of the Emperor.
