MAORI BOY FALLS FROM BRIDGE - DROWNED

[Special l o ’'Noether Advor'a'o "j GISBORNE, This Day, A Maori boy. Hati Nukunuku. aged nine years, was drowned in the Uawa River. Tolnga Bay, yesterday. The boy went on to the old Uawa River Bridge to fish with a young brother, and apparently overbalanced and fell into the water. He was able to cling to one of the piles for a short time. but, the current was too strong and he was forced to release his grip. Seeing Nukunuku’s plight. Tommy Koran, a 14-year-old Maori boy, took off his boots and dived in. When he neared the boy in difficulties. Koran felt him get a grip on his throat, and entwine his legs about him. After going under the wafer twice, Koran became so exhausted that he had to make his way to the bank. Nukunuku being some way down the river. Men working on the new bridge noticed the boys struggling in the water, but as none of I hem were good swimmers they could be of little assistance.
