January 6. j Rain today interfered with play in the first series of the Melbourne inter- ' national tennis mate-lies between Aus- i tralia, Germany and America at the Kooyong stadium. Although the court was covered between the showers it was slow. > Results are:— ■ Singles.—Mako (America) defeated Henkel (Germany). 3 —G. 6 —o. G —o; | von Gramm (Germany) defeated i Bromwich (Australia). 6 — 2. 7—5. Mako’s Clever Play. The doubles between Budge and | Make- and Quist and Bromwich was j postponed. After losing the first set i in his match against Henkel, Mako i won the next 12 games in two love j sets, easily defeating the German. i Mako played a clever variety of ' chop shots and slices which complete- j ly upset Henkel’s timing, although the 1 latter found many opportunities of j going to the net, where he volleyed j consistently and severely. Von Gramm hit harder than Brom- > wich and had greater control over his j shots. He served several aces. You Gramm led 4—l in the sec- j ond set, but Bromwich, driving with a better length, evened the | score at four all. Then von Gramm’s service gave him the vie- | tory.
