BORAH WARNS AGAINST WAR PSYCHOLOGY
(Received 10 a.m.)
NEW YORK, December 23,
The former Secretary of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Mr W. E, Borah, voiced a warning against “war psychology,” but said: “We have a right, and it is our duty, to protect Americans and legitimate United States interests in China.
‘A vast amount is being done by some people here at home and some people abroad to create a war feeling and war psychology,” lie added. “That ought to be condemned. The United States has its own interests and own honour to pro-
tect, but, if permitted to confine itself to that task without being involved in other people’s interests, my opinion is that it will preserve both, and without war. “The President said in his Chicago speech: Tt is my determination to pursue a policy of peace and adopt every practicable measure to avoid being involved in war.’ I assume that without a do-übt, the President is seeking to do that very thing. “I do not think we ought to get out of China or leave the East. Neither do I think that if we ’fail to do so we are going to have war with Japan. The world has ample proof that the people of the United States will, and can, fight, and there is a point at which every self-respecting nations must take ut .si as.”
