CYCLE CLUB FO FOSTER RUNNING

The annual meeting of the Whangarei Cycle Racing Club was held before a good attendance on Wednesday evening in the Royal Hall. The financial position was shown to be satisfactory. '

‘The retiring president, Mr W. Slade Clarke, congratulated the members upon the successful season. He commented on the enthusiasm displayed in the various trophy events. He stated that as it was impossible to separate a number of riders qualifying for a special trophy donated by Kendall Bros, for the most improved rider, he had received the permission of the donors for the cup to be raced off on a points basis during the present track season.

Mr Clarke spoke of the achievement of the club in getting the use of an area of land for the track, and the transformation from a rough wilderness to its present condition.

Thanks were expressed to members of the committee and to the donors of trophies presented during the past season. Mr Clarke mentioned that so far, at least six new trophies had been promised. Officers elected were:—

Patron, Mr J. G. Draper; pz-esident, Mr A. Snow; vice-president, Mr J. McDermot; secretary, Mr K. Wright: committee, Messrs H. G. Buckley, W. Slade Clark; N. Beeston, W. Beeston, A. Walker, E. Walker; riders’ representatives, J. Byers; W. Buckley; club captain, H. Alexander.

Perhaps the most important decision in the history of the club

was the decision to change its name to “The Whangarei Cycle Racing and Athletic Club.” This action was the result of a notice of motion by A. Snow with the intention of fostering running in the district. There is now no form of control over that branch of the sport and it was felt that there must be a number of young men with interests in that recreation. Provision was made on the committee for full representation of the new branch. It was left to the president and secretary to call together runners and others interested at a very early date to form a sub-com-mittee and commence activity as early as possible, thereby giving runners every chance of gaining form preparatory to the sports held by the different country clubs up till about Easter. During supper, Mr Clarke presented trophies won during the season.
