SAVAGE STATEMENT EASES TENSION IN MIDLANDS

r.died Press Association. —By Electric Telepi aph. — Copyright .] (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, December 9. The prompt reply of Mr M. J. Savage to the British footwear traders regarding New Zealand’s higher tariff soundings, the revelation of which caused a sensation and a threat to boycott New Zealand goods, has eased the tension in the Midlands.

Manufacturers, who are reported to be more conciliatory, are waiting to learn the extent of the threat to their exports before making a further move.

Mr Savage’s statement was published fully in newspapers in Leicester, which led the hostility, and has resulted in a saner outlook, and removal of fears that New Zealand’s dairy produce campaign in the Midlands might be seriously affected.
