Close Finishes In Last Night’s Racing
Close finishes and a good general standard of racing characterised the weekly track race held by the Whangarei Cycle Racing and Athletic Club last evening. Results were:—
One and a-half mile handicap.—H. Povey (90 yards) 1. D, Walker (120 yards) 2, Bruce McKenzie (240 yards) 3. Time, 4m 17 l-ss.
One mile handicap.—H. Povey (GO yards) 1, Bruce McKenzie (120 yards) 2. I, Mears (100 yards) 3. Time, 2m 49 1 -ss.
Povey and Walker were again the outstanding riders of the evening. Bruce McKenzie rode well to be placed second in the one mile and third in the IJ-mile events, as did Ivan Mears to ride into third position in the one mile contest.
Bert McKenzie would definitely have boon placed in the if ho had been riding seriously, while J. Byers did not ride up to his usual standard.
Both races presented very close and spectacular finishes, especially the Umile in which the first three riders were separated by loss than one half of a wheel.
