H. Alexander Wins Off Scratch

CYCLE RACING

The Whangarei Cycle Racing Club staged the last of its second series of races on Saturday afternoon. A field of 10 lined up for the 28mile ride and the winner was H. Alexander, whose success oIT the scratch mark was very popular. He covered the distance in 75 minutes 35 seconds, defeating J. Byers, off the seven-minute mark by six seconds. T. Young (7mins) was third. 2 h minutes further behind.

The result was: H. Alexander (scr). 75.35, 1; J. Byers i7mins), 82.41, 2; T. Young (7mins), 85.20, 3; R. Buckley (Mmins), 4. The field included Gavin, an Auckland rider of no mean ability. Cups have been won over the last series as follows: —

“Buck-Up” Cup, presented by Mr H. G. Buckley for race on August 14, S. McKenzie; Settlers’ Gup. presented by Mr Oscar Jones for race on August 28, H. Povey; cup, presented by “Admirer” for open race on September 4 to Mata and return, T. Young; Hibburt Cup, presented by Mr Hibburt, president of the Auckland Cycle Club, for Saturday’s race, H. Alexander; senior points cup, J. Byers, 22 points, I. H. Alexander, and I. Mears, 18, equal 2; junior points cup, presented by Mr J. McDermott, R. Buckley,_ 28 points, 1, S. McKenzie, 26, 2; times cup, H. Alexander, 21 points, 1, JByers, 16, 2, W. Buckley, 14, 3.
