WOMEN POLICE WOULD PROTECT THE YOUNG
-W. C. T. V.
For years the W.C.T.U. has been working for the ’appointment of women police. They would, Mrs Roberts (president) told the Northland convention on Saturday, be a great help in combating the evil of drink at dances. Since her young days, times had changed, she said, and girls now did not have to wait for an introduction. In a dance hall they might become on quite friendly terms with men of bad. character.
Women police, she felt, could help to prevent girls drinking and ruining their characters and bodies. Should police women see a girl in the street with an undesirable man, Mrs Roberts suggested they might have the right to go to the girl and warn her against him.
Women police would guard and help the young, she said. New Zealand was very backward in this direction. In the Old Country the staffs of women police were being increased.
.The convention decided to communicate with Mr J. G. Barclay and the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, urging the formation of women police corps in New Zealand.
