“HOPALONG CASSIDY” AT THE PLAZA.

Amusements

That Hopalang Cassidy, hero of countless Western stories, is still a favourite with the picture-loving public .was evidenced on Satui’day evening,'when a large audience assembled at the Plaza to see another episode in the life of this famous character. The picture was worthy the audience, fofit was replete with all the ingi’edients of a real western drama. > The story revolved round the rustling I of cattle from ranches on the outskirts of the Indian Reservation. Animals | disappeared mysteriously, leading to i suspicion of one rancher by another. I Cassidy suspected a Government official in the Indian protection service, and the maimer in which he laid the culprit low, and sheeted home to him ! (Ire murder of an Indian who knew 1 more than was good for the deputy, constituted a thrilling story, in which woodcraft, horsemanship, and skill with revolver and rifle, played a prominent part. William Boyd, as Hopalongv was af his best. Comedy was not lacking. The redoubtable “Windy” was largely responsible for this. | The drama was played before a j background of scenery grand and beau- | tiful, comprising mountain, lake and river, and there were many intimate I glimpses of the red man in his native j haunts. It was a fine treat, taken all jin all. the more so because it was not \ concerned with the problems which I generally form"'the theme of the modj ern play. j Another feature of the programme j was a murder drama which nobody I saw. This was capital fun and mys- ' tery, the solution of which it would t not be fair to divulge to those who j have not seen the drama. The ' pro- ! gramme; to be repeated tonight, is one which makes a subtle appeal to old and young alike. BARRIE’S “QUALITY STREET” AT REGENT. The screen interpretation of Sir James Barrie’s delightful story, “Quality Street,” was shown at the Regent Theatre on Satux*day evening. It is only appropriate that Katheidne Hepburn, who appeared with distinction in the screen version cf another Bar- ] rie story, “Little Minister,” should be I assigned the leading feminine role, i She is cast as a pretty inhabitant of ultra-dignified Quality Sti'cot and her romance with a dashing young doctor, a part played by Franchot Tone, provides an exceedingly entertaining theme. !

Comedy is amply provided in this film, an amusing characterisation of a recruitind sergeant being contributed by Eric Elore.

“Quality Street” is accompanied by a good programme of supports.
