Owing to a number of seniors being absent, Hikurangi nacl a nard job to Held a tuff tearii against Kensington on Saturday, and were forced to play four junior members.' One of tnese, o. Davies, played yan outstanding game, and is well up to senior standard. As usual, Gabolinsky, playing fullback for the home team, was safe. C. Hamilton, at centre, aiso piayed wen. Kensington fielded a fine big pack, with McNeil hooking well and giving his - backs their full share of the leather. Tooth and Child, as halfback and full-back showed talent. / ' The game, played /on the worst ground that Hikurangi has probably seen for many years, revealed none of the sparkling football which these teams can usually be relied on to turn on. ■ / *
In the first half, Kensington lost several opportunities through their backs not making their attacks sharp enough and handling when the correct footba'll tactics on such a day 1 would have been to keep the ball at toe. ' However, it was a fairly fast, game, with Kensington having the territorial advantage. Shortly before the second half, McGregor, Kensington’s wing man, was injured and was replaced by Deasly, who made his debut by coming on to the field and kicking a splendid goal—a penalty against Hikurangi for obstructing.— Kensington 2, Hikurangi 0. Shortly after, Dahl gathered the ball up nicely, came through very fast and was rewarded by a nice try. C. Hamilton failed to convert.—Hikurangi 3, Kensington 2. The game was much faster in the second spell, Hikurangi’s backs engineering some splendid movements. At one stage it looked as if Hikurangi were out to improve their score, when S. ‘Meyer made a clean breakaway, passed to E. O’Callaghan, who. however, was not quite fast enough and was well grassed by the Kensington full-back. Kensington managed to clear but throughout they were hard pressed. The game ended with the score unchanged. Mr W. Brydon was referee.
