City Just Head Portland

Fortunes fluctuated in the CityPortland game played on the latter’s ground, and the large gathering of spectators was kept at a continual high pitch of excitement. The final score of 14—10 in City’s favour was a true indication of the respective merits of the teams in a game in which the Portland forwards dominated the sat scrums and rucks, while the City backs combined and handled more effectively than their opponents. After Massey had raised the flags from a penalty kick for Portland the
City backs gained the ascendancy, and rattled on eleven points before their disorganised opponents could strengthen their defence. The eleven points came from unconverted tries by Calder, Rice and Payne and Payne also succeeded with a penalty kick. In the second half Scott dived over for an unconverted try. The home team kept up the pressure and were rewarded when Scott increased their score with a penalty, kick. Then McLean intercepted in City’s twentyfive and raced under the posts unopposed to score an unconverted try. In the last minute of the game, Lorrimer caught the home team napping and broke clean away to hand on to Calder who scored an unconverted try. \ Mr E. Bowyer was referee.
Fourth Grade Rivalry
The City fourth-graders scored an easy win over Kensington by 21 points to nil in the early game at headquarters. Bell scored three tries and Braphy two, Jenyns converting two and Bell one. Mr J. Pitman was referee. , Out at Hikurangi, Kamo were defeated by one point, 6—5.
