The committee recommended no action be taken and this was adopted. ; CONCRETE FOOTPATH. The Mayor reported that he had edihferred with Mr W. H. M. Yarrow with reference to the footpath on the frontage of the property at the cor* ner of Walton Street and Maunu Road' He had agreed with Mr Yarrow that the council would concrete the foot path for the entile frontage of the property, for which he is to contribute the sum of £25. COMPLAINT ABOUT ROAD. The solicitor for Mr H. J. Babe, Woodhill, pointed out' “the shocking state” of the road past the residence ■ of their client, and suggesting that the road be formed and rpetalled. It was decided to reply that this road had only recently been taken over by the council and that previously no money could have been spent on it. GOVERNMENT HOUSING. Mr J. G. Barclay, M.P., forwarded designs of new Government houses to be built. He commended to the borough the opportunity the Government was giving of getting cheap money to build houses in Whangarei. There was a large requirement to be filled here for more houses, and, if the borough would take advantage of cheap money and other help offered, the State would stand aside. The Government regarded the. building of better and more houses as a sure way to restore prosperity and at the same time create a .very real asset, and the borough's co-op-eration was asked. The Mayor said that this was going tc be a big question. They wanted to take, advantage qi anything for the benefit of the town, but, in view of their experience with the workers’ dwelling scheme, they should go warconsider it carefully. said he thought possible consideration should be given the matter. question was referred to the lesa and finance committee. |
