IT’S A GREAT LIFE ON SUNDAY ISLAND
t Special zo ’'Northern Advocate”! AUCKLAND, This Day. Says Mr E. King, a young Australian who arrived from Sunday Island on the auxiliary ketch Yvonne on Saturday afternoon:—
“It's a great life. There Is no bustle on the Island; no trams or buses, or offices or buildings, and no tax collectors to worry you. But there is always something to keep you interested.”
When the Yvonne left six days ago the men on the island were in the best of health, and, though far from civilisation, were happy and contented with life. There are now five men on the island apart from Messrs A. Bacon and H. Robertson, who landed over a year ago, and including Messrs J. Sneddon and S. J. Oliver, who were taken out by the Yvonne on her last trip from New Zealand. Mr King said the islanders had to be careful to keep track of the date, and there was consternation recently when it was found that one day had been lost.
He set out from the island last Sunday, and made good progress before a stiff gale, which sent the craft along at between 9 to 10 knots. The gale did not blow out until Tuesday, and on that day he had to use the engine, occasionally sailing when there was enough wind. These conditions continued until Thursday, and on Friday morning there was a good nor’-nor’west breeze until she sighted the Moko Hinau light north of the Great Barrier Island, on Saturday morning.
The other members of the crew are Messrs. H. B. Sorenson (master), J. Boshier (cook), and R. S. Wood.
