PORTLAND BOWLING SEASON OPENED

Weather conditions were ideal on Saturday afternoon when the Portland Bowling Club opened its season. In. the absence of the president, Mr W. E. Williams, Mr F. Go,wer welcomed a large gathering of visiting bowlers and sought their co-operation in helping to maintain the Portland’s club policy of inter-club visits. Mr Gower commepded the greenkeeper, Mr Geo. Davies, upon the excellent condition of the green and then called upon Mrs W. E. Williams to throw the opening kitty. Although somewhat affected by the heavy rain of the preceding day, the green became increasingly faster as play progressed, and some keenly contested games* resulted as follows: — Portland’s president team, R. L. Wilson, Whitham, George, Gower, 19, v. Centre team, McLaren, Evans, Grant, T. H, Wilson, 16; Hendy, Thackeray, Marwick, Whitelaw, 23, v. Ackers, McDonald, Robinson, Brown, 18; Evans, Caplin, Simmons, Judd, 24, v. Sargent, Morrison, Baker, Staple, 13; Newman, Woledge, Nobes, Brewis, 23, v.' Bulmer, Just, Purchase, Ferguson, 20; Cleverly, Stewart, Morrish, Piggott, 21, v. Shipman, Kelly, Homer, McMath, 16; McGregor, Wyatt, Amos, Cutforth, 20, v. Adams, Guest, Leese, Cox, 15.. .

CROQUET CLUB CEREMONY. Sharing with the bowling club the pleasant weather conditions which prevailed on Saturday afternoon, the croquet club successfully opened its season. Mr F, Gower, acting-president of the bowling club, introduced Mrs W. Jones, Mayoress of Whangarei, and addressed a representative gathering before hitting the first ball of the season. Included in the visitors from the Whangarei and Kensington clubs were Mrs Radcliffe, Mrs Harrison, Miss Radcliffe, Mrs Evans, Miss Walker, Mrs Horner, Mrs Jones, Mrs Nesbitt. The results of the afternoon’s competitions were:— Golf croquet: Mrs R. Harrison. Rings: Mrs Nesbitt. Ladder; Mrs Gower.

The following local residents took part in the competitions:—Mrs E. Pemberton, Mrs J. Pink, Mrs D. Naylor, Mrs F. Boyd, Mrs P. Colvin, Mrs T. Adams, Mrs A. Town, Mrs E. Dew, Mrs L. McLean, Mrs J.
