REMOVAL OF MATERIAL FROM BEACH

NOT ON COUNTY COUNCIL INSTRUCTIONS

Complaints from property owners to the Marine Department that the Taurikura Beach was being destroyed by the removal by carriers of material from the beach and the depositing of tailings from a quarry into the bay, were' brought to the notice of the Whangarei County Council by the inspector of fisheries, Mr W. M. Fraser, yesterday.'

With the exception of - Marsden Point, for some years all beaches in the Whangarei harbour have been closed against the removal of sand or shingle,” Mr Fraser said, adding that he had been requested to report to the departmen. He asked the council to inform him whether the shingle had been carted under its instructions and what quantity had been removed. Cr. A. Clarke said that some years previously a small deposit of stone had. been washed up on the foreshore. The council had used a small quantity of that for road maintenance purposes, but, for the past three years, supplies had been drawn solely from a quarry almost abreast of where the rock had been washed up.
