HEIFERS TAKEN TO COURT

THEFT CHARGE FROM FAR

NORTH

r Special to "Northern Advocate.”! AUCKLAND, This Day.

The necessity for the identification of alleged stolen property led to a most unusual happening in the Supreme Court this morning, when two heifers were brought to Court.

The case was one in which Peter Yerkovich, farmer, of Waiharara, North Auckland* was charged with the theft of three heifers, and the vital point in the case against the accused was proof of earmarks and brands on the animals. It was alleged .that the accused had branded them with his own mark, and that, in one case, the brand was super-imposed on that of the owner. The production of the exhibits involved a long journey, the heifers being brought from Houhora, a distance of about 260 miles.

They were first driven 25 miles to Awanui, and then shipped to Auckland, the journey occupying two days.

This morning the heifers were brought into the Court grounds, and, during an adjournment, the Judge, jury and counsel inspected their markings.
