PUBLICITY FOR WHANGAREI

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SUGGESTION

The' Whangarei Chamber of Commerce at a council meeting on Wednesday night discussed the question of publicity for the North. It was resolved to do as much as possible in this connection, and, with a view to endeavouring to create the organisation whicS can give Whangarei and surrounding districts the continued publicity it deserves, Mr W. T. Surman made the following suggestion, which has the two-fold object of (1) providing a steady income for publicity purposes, (2) carrying out a properly organised programme. The idea, which is briefly as follows, will be sent to the Mayor, Mr W. Jones: —

(1) The formation of a publicity committee consisting of representatives from the Whangarei Borough Council, Harbour Board, Chamber of Commerce, A. and P. Society, Kamo Town Board. Onerahi Town Board and possibly other societies and boards.

(2) ‘The objects and duties of the committee would be to raise funds and endeavour to obtain a steady income in the following manner:—(l) annual grants from local bodies and institutions, (2) annual subscriptions for business men and others interested, (3) donations, (4) any other source which may become available; (b) to lay out a programme of expenditure; (c) to carry out the programme. (3) Obtain the services of a collec-tor-organiser, possibly on a commission basis, excluding grants from local bodies and institutions. (4) An annual report io be furnished to all subscribers.

With a view to having the scheme fully considered, the council decided to request the Mayor to call a conference of local bodies and societies and others interested, when the scheme could be fully discussed.
