MR BORAH TO CONTEST U.S. PRESIDENCY?

(Received 10 a.m.)

WASHINGTON, February 4.

The well-known Republican member of the Senate, Mr W. E. Borah, today became the first definite aspirant for the office of President, now held by Mr Roosevelt. He announced that he would actively compete for the Republican party’s nomination. The principal opposition to Mr Borah, at present, appears to centre in Mr Alfred M. Landon, Governor of Kansas, and Mr Franklin Knox, proprietor of the “Chicago Daily News.” Neither of these has definitely announced himself as a candidate, but both have indicated that they will contest the nomination. The Eastern Cons will form a strong support for Mr Landon, even though he is a Western man.

It*appears likely now, according to political observers, that a bitter interparty 'fight between the Cons and the Progressives will results in the former backing Mr Landon and the latter Mr Borah. Support for Mr Knox has not yet crystalised.
