WATER DEEP AT HIKURANGI
Except for private parties working on the Waro Hills, mining is at a standstill at Hikurangi today. The old workings at the Waro Mine hi , * ■ *•' V* *, * / ’ are completely submerged, with a number of pumps several hundred , feet below the surface. However, with the remaining machinery, it is thought that the water will be removed within - a few days. The two hew dips, which are being are overflowing ■'Jhis morn,-/ ing.
Muddy streams travelled at will oiyer the flat-lying portion of the township, and the Post Office floor was covered to a depth of a couple of feet.
Ih a house owned by the Belton Estate, King Street, the chimney collapsed, damaging the roof. The most serious damage was the loss of the main water supply to the Hikurangi Dairy Company. Many chains of the pipeline, over a mile long, coming from the hills at the back: of the factory, were carried away, and no work could be done at the factory yesterday. An expenditure of some hundreds of pounds will be to repair the damage. One of the dams of the Hikurangi tovkfh supply was also carried away, but .'the two main dams withstood the pressure, and the service continued without interruption. Today, arrangements were made to link the Dairy Company with the town supply.
