THE STATE OF THE ROADS

At midday today, the Northern Patrol of the A.A. was able to report as follows: —

Practically all roads and side-roads have been damaged. Floods are receding quickly, but in many cases washouts, slips and culverts are still holding up traffic. The road is completely gone in the Wheki Valley, and is still badly flooded at Taylor’s Flat. The washout on the detour route via Houtu will be repaired by this afternoon.

Flood water is over the road at Kirikopuni, and as soon as this recedes traffic will be able to get through to Dargaville. The Whangarei-Auckland road, via Kaukapakapa-White Hills or Helensville, is negotiable. The new work in the Dome Valley has subsided and is likely to hold up traffic for some days.

The Maungaturoto-Paparoa-Darga-ville route is clear.

Fraser’s Flat, on the Mangakahia route, .is badly flooded. No advice is to'- hand regarding slips in the Mangakahia Gorge. Although there is still a little water over the road, traffic got through to Whangarei from Kawakawa this morning. Just north of Kawakawa the water is very deep and traffic today is not recommended.

The Russell road is badly blocked with slips, and is not likely to be open for some days. .The Mangamuka Gorge is also blocked, but traffic is using the Man-gonui-Kaeo route.

In many cases the road is badly gutted, and motorists are advised to travel slowly, as in many cases slips are down, just enabling traffic to get through.
