WEIR A CENTURY

SCHOOL TEAM COLLAPSE

By brilliant batting, G 1 L. Weir ran into three figures batting against High School. The game was played on the School wicket, and Weir relished his native turf. Remembering his earlier failures, the international took his time against bowling, which was very accurate for a start, and always was pitched at a good length. However, with his eye and the ball wedded, he opened his shoulders, scoring in boundaries, while his partners contented themselves with singles. Weir hit four fours and five sixes, and was out in trying to repeat the maximum shot. Murdoch took the catch right on the boundary. The only other chance offered by the batsman was a difficult one to James, fielding behind the bowler’s head. In 25 overs High School were dismissed for 24 runs! The boys were rather too cautious, but have the satisfaction of knowing that they could keep the deliveries of Weir out or their wickets. He sent down seven overs for 6 runs without success. Jenyns’ 12 overs cost only seven runs, while Wilton bowled 5 for 8 runs and seven wickets. He just missed the hat trick in cleaning up the tail. Scores were:— - COMBINED SERVICES. FAYNE AND CHILD ’KARAMEA’S DESTRUCTIVF AGENTS

Whangarei’s effort to force the pace against Fayne and Chilcf’had the result of getting more men out than it got runs. Like Onerahi, the previous week, they failed mainly because the bowling was too accurate and could not be hit. ’’Karamea batsmen were again very stubborn and kept Whangarei, who were several men short, in the field until well after the tea' interval. Child topped 40 after giving three chances. One to Smith was easy and Bercich was lucky. Speer’s life at the crease was short but merry. It was not long before Nisbet got a good one into the stumps. The bowler was not allowing any liberties, and was the only dangerous man Wilson could find. Whangarei, except for Cowan, used the long handle, all being out for 55. It is significant that Cowan was the only double-figure scorer. Wilson attempted to swing Fayne out of the 1 ground, but his leg stump sprang from the turf. It is something new for the champions to be beaten so hollowly. Details were: — MAUNGAKARAMEA. O’Carroll, c.
