COSTLY ERRORS

OLD BOYS FAULTY IN FIELD

Bright carried Old Boys on his back when they made their first appearance on the central wicket at headquarters, and his 65 went a'long way to bringing the final tally to 103. However, this was not sufficient for Onerahi, who, given a fine start by Fyfe and Hewlett, passed it with three men to go. The openers put on 55, and it looked as if things would be easy, but five fell in quick succession, and the complexion of the game was changed completely.

Burch struck a good length, and, in his first oyer, claimed an l.b.w. victim in Tail Hewlett was bowling well at the other end and in nine overs n«> conceded only 12 runs. But for a good stand by Bright and Williams, Old Boys would have been looking pretty sick. The former played confident cricket, and dealt with Burch very surely, and the trundlers found the broad blade of Williams hard to pass. ; Several mistakes by the-home side in the field cost them the match, Fyfe being missed before he had gained double figures. Hewlett also had a similar fortunate escape. Onerahi showed .their vulnerability as a batting combination, Given getting among them with very little cost. Finally it developed into a struggle for the runs, with Broomfield and Burch seeing things through. Details:— OLD BOYS. Tait, Ibw, b Burch 1 Given, b Burch 4 Bright, c Mason, b Drake 65 A. NOMADS RECOVER DEFEAT oFIIIKURANGI Nomads met early trouble in their game at Hikurahgi, losing the opening batsmen with only three runs on the board. However, when Dunn 'went, the score had reached 36, and later Cotterill and Dunning added 43 for | the sixth wicket. Cotterill again was aggressive from the ouxset, but he was soon overhauled by Dunning, who wielded the bat very vigorously. Dunning’s only chance was a high hit off Teesdale. Lawrie got his fingers to it but the ball rolled over the boundary. Vesey and Teesdale, the slow men, were able to accustom themselves to the conditions. The former kept an admirable length and turned them from the off.

The innings terminated in a heavy rain shc-wer, and Nomads in their out cricket, had to put up with a sodden ball and slippery turf. The bowling at the outset was very wild, but the batsmen accommodatingly got themselves out. McNay and Lawrie put on 30 together, and Lawrie continued batting in his old style—aggression tempered with caution. Although wickets were toppling at the other end, the home side always had a chance while he was in, but with the score at 65, he attempted to hook an overtossed ball, and fell to a good catch by Collins at Square leg. It appeared that another storm, which had been looming for some time, might save Hikurangi, but it held off, and the innings closed shortly after five o’clock. Details were:— NOMADS.
