PUPILS ENTERTAIN
PORTLAND SCHOOL. On Thursday, the residents of Port 1 - land were entertained by the staff and pupils of . Portland School , at an at home. The co-operation and interest in school matters were demonstrated by the record gathering, and the expressions of appreciation mat were so frequently given. The grounds were most favourably commented upon, masses of bloom striking a gay note among the shady trees on the trim lawns and terraces. After viewing a display of the children’s work in the various class rooms, the visitors were entertained by musical, elocutionary and play items.
The; headmaster, Mr R. A. Watson, after congratulating the visitors on their splendid muster and Interest, gave a brief address on modern education and the value of co-operation and understanding, where the school
became a vital force in the community. . A display of folk and Morns dances concluded a very delightful afternoon. As many expressed it, “although the first of its kind in the district let us hope it is the forerunner of many more.” An enjoyable evening was spent last Saturday at the residence of Mr and Mrs H. Ellis, of Tanekaha, when a party was given in honour of Mr Hugh Ellis’ birthday. The evening was spent in singing and dancing, and many old-time songs were sung. Mr Ellis cut the large birthday cake, and was toasted amid hearty congratulations.
