PESSIMISM
FEELING IN ADDIS ABABA “LEFT TO PLAY LONE HAND” LITTLE IN PEACE TALK RUMOURS? (Received 1.30 -p.m.) PARIS, October 25. It is understood M. Laval’s report to the Foreign Affairs Committee refers to the new negotiations at Geneva, based on reconvening the Committee of Five on October 31. It is believed Italy is fully prepared to state her present case to the Committee, but demands that the negotiations shall be strictly private. . She considers the elaboration of a suitable compromise acceptable to Italy and Abyssinia is impossible, if the negotiations are subject to outside interference! A London message, however, states that there is at present in London absence of any concrete fact to encourage the belief that steps for a settlement of the Italo-Abyssinian conflict are likely to mature before October 31, when sanctions will be applicable. An Addis Ababa dispatch says the Government is pessimistic. The opinion is general that Britain is; letting down Abyssinia, which will be forced to fight unaided.
