“A PERFORMANCE OF SATAN”
■ (Received 10 a.m.) i J ASMARA, October 23. J a Residents. of Adowa have seen 1 their first talkie. It was present- l [ ed in the city square, in the J I midst of which a theatre has i J been erected, complete with ■ i stalls and pit. The humbler citi- [ ■ zens standing at the rear nearly I jj stampeded at the sight of the pro- J I jector, which at first they be- R ■ lieved to be a hew kind of gun. i J They seemed to regard the pic- J l ture as a performance of Satan, | 1 but eventually applauded the J J Italian Alpine manoeuvres and J ■ cheered King Victor' Emanuel and i J Signor Musjsolini, after the Ital- ■ I ians had given them the cue. R > I They were excited by the Ital- ij ■ ian march on Adowa because ■ ■ they recognised the country, and t i were astounded by the naval ■ J manoeuvres because many hith- J i erto had not seen ships or the sea. ■» ■ Another startling novelty was ■ [ the introduction of electric light, t 1 Thousands gazed fascinated, at ■ ■ the incandescent bulbs between ■ 2 the poles. They were supplied J ■ with electricity by cable from i . J Asmara, ' Eritrea. The unblinking ■ | ■ glare, without smoke or flame, t i amazed the spectators. I tmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm*
