OBITUARY

MRS W. E. KBYTE. 45 YEARS IN WHANGAREI. The death occurred at the Whangarei Public Hospital last night of Mrs Harriet Adele Keyte, aged 70 years. Deceased was a daughter of Josiah Flower Carter, managing director of the earliest oil-winning company to be formed in New Zealand. He superintended the. sinking of the first bore near New Plymouth, and set into activity a development which continues today, and in which many thousands of pounds ha\*e been invested With Tittle return.Spending her schooldays at New Plymouth and at Thames, then the centre of the gold rush, deceased, in 1891, married Mr W. E. Keyte. The ceremony took place at Auckland and the home was established in Whangarei, where Mr Keyte’s people had been settlers since 1865., Upon the retirement of his father* Mr Keyte became the head of the undertaking business, in which he has continued ever since. Together with his brother, James, Mr Keyte built three houses in Kamo Road, thus doubling the- number, of residences in that, area. It was to one of these houses that his bride returned after her marriage. A home lover always, she made the welfare and happiness of her family her first consideration. Mrs Keyte has been in failing health for some time, and, for six months following last Christmas, was an inmate of the Whangarei District Hospital. She returned home for a short time, but on contracting pneumonia, whs readmitted three days ago. There are left the widower and a family of one son, Allan (Keyte. Street, Whangarei), and five daughters (Mesdames R. Keogh, Otaika; B. Smith, Te Rapa, Onehunga; G. Cadman, Hastings, and Misses Ruth, Hastings, and Maisie, Whangarei). One, son, Josiah, lost his life through a drowning accident in the Whangarei River a month after the outbreak of the Great War, and another son and daughter predeceased their mother. The funeral will leave 165, Bank Street, for the'Kioreroa Cemetery at 12.30 p.m. tomorrow.
